Statement to Members of Scouting Ireland from the Chief Scout

Dear Scouts & Scouters

Today I am announcing my decision to temporarily step aside as your Chief Scout.

I have conveyed my decision to take this step to the meeting of your National Management Committee / Board of Scouting Ireland Services CLG last evening.  I have the full support of the board of directors.

I believe it is in the best interests of our organisation that I do so in order to give adequate time to bring our investigation to a conclusion, noting a deadline of the end of May 2018.

I have always believed that those who carry authority in Scouting Ireland must accept the accountability that comes with it.  As Chief Scout and as a co-respondent in the process currently underway, I believe my standing aside is the right thing to do and will help ensure the current process is allowed to continue without delay and further distraction.   I intend to co-operate fully with any process which is important to ensuring all of us within the organisation and the public in general, can have confidence in our safeguarding procedures.

Scouting Ireland is an organisation that plays an important role in communities and lives throughout Ireland.   It is important that everyone in the organisation continues to focus on the young people we serve and that safeguarding remains a priority for Scouting Ireland.

Yours in Scouting

Christy McCann

Chief Scout
