As you may know, the National Beaver Survivor Challenge takes place on June 8th. This national event can be delivered at group or county level.
- Beaver Survivor Challenge - Local
- Beaver Survivor Challenge - Larch Hill
A county event may add additional excitement for Beavers who may not have not met others outside their group, but this is for you to decide.
As it's a national event, Larch Hill is also available for groups who wish to travel. This option will be available at the point of registration. Groups who want to stay overnight can book camping directly with Larch Hill in the usual way.
Registration is open now via MyScouts.ie. A digital Resource Pack will be provided to each registered group before June 8th. This will list the materials you need for each 'Challenge' and provide instructions for each one.
In the meantime, the Challenges are listed below and Beavers may want to practice them leading up to the event. They only have to complete 6 out of 10 on the day.
- Challenge 1: Forge Your Shelter - Construct a durable shelter with the materials given to them.
- Challenge 2: Nature's Bounty Hunt - Explore the surrounding area to gather herbs/plants, stones and other treasures to strengthen their connection to the natural world.
- Challenge 3: Water Alchemy - Purify water using primitive filtration methods such as sand and charcoal.
- Challenge 4: Ember Keepers - Use flint and tinder to create embers and maintain a fire.
- Challenge 5: Wayfinders' Quest - Use crude maps, sunstones and other basic materials to learn how to find the four cardinal points (and more if able).
- Challenge 6: Knots - Information and Practice
- Challenge 7: Fire-Forged Cooking - Use primitive cooking tools and an open flame to attempt to prepare a simple meal.
- Challenge 8: First Aid - Practice basic First Aid
- Challenge 9: Communicating with the Gods - Create large scale Geoglyphs using tent pegs, sisal and a compass.
- Challenge 10: Tribal Trials - Team trials to test skills and solidarity
You and they can choose the Challenges that interest them and suit their skill level.
As this is the first Beaver Survivor Challenge, we hope as many Beavers as possible will have the opportunity to attend and enjoy the outdoors at this exciting event.
