Today, on World Autism Awareness Day, Scouting Ireland celebrates the diversity and unique strengths of all our members. We are committed to creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcome and supported. In recognition of this, the Scouting Ireland Neurodiversity Team has prepared some ideas designed to help our neurodiverse Scouts thrive in camps and activities.
The Mindful Tent / Breakaway Zones are just one of the resources introduced to help Scouts who may need a quiet space to regroup and manage sensory overload. These areas are designed with the needs of neurodiverse individuals in mind, offering a variety of calming tools to help them navigate the busy camp environment.
Ideas for Mindful Tents & Breakaway Zones:
- Single Occupation Space
A designated area that offers a quiet and personal space to reduce sensory overload and provide a moment of calm.
- Inflatable Chair / Lounger
Comfortable and soothing seating options to help Scouts relax and unwind, allowing them to retreat when they need a break.
- Large Weighted Blanket
An optional comforting item for those who find it calming. Note that not all individuals may benefit from it, so it’s available on a voluntary basis.
- Fidget Toys Box with Spinners, Squeeze Toys, Slinkys
A variety of sensory tools like spinners and squeeze toys are available to support relaxation and focus.
- Option to Black Out Tent
A tent that can be darkened to help block out bright lights and visual distractions, creating a more soothing environment for those who are light-sensitive.
- Pitch in Quiet (but Visible) Area of Camp
The mindful tent is pitched in a quiet, peaceful area of camp, ensuring it’s away from high-traffic zones while still being easily accessible for those who need it.
- Mindfulness Colouring Book & Sharpened Pencils
Offering a calming activity, Scouts can engage in mindfulness through colouring books with themes that promote relaxation, creativity, and focus.
- Ear Defenders & Sunglasses
Noise-canceling ear defenders are provided to help manage noise sensitivity, while sunglasses assist with light sensitivity.
- Sensory Torch
A sensory-friendly torch, with adjustable brightness and colour settings, is available for those who may benefit from controlled visual stimulation.
