29th November 2023
Dear Members,
In the aftermath of the recent events in Dublin, we find ourselves reflecting on the values that define us as Scouts and the role we play in promoting a just and inclusive society. There are several values that define us as Scouts from the moment we first join and make a promise to uphold the Scout Law. From Loving the World to Seeking Out Justice for all, we strive to make the world a better place. We all have a role to play in promoting a just, inclusive, and peaceful society and instilling these values in the young people we Scout with. It is with deep concern and a commitment to our principles that we address you today.
The riots that occurred last week have brought to light issues of racism, inequality, and discrimination within our society. As Scouts, we cannot remain silent in the face of such challenges. Our movement has always stood for inclusivity, understanding, and the celebration of diversity, and it is in these moments that we must actively reinforce these values. Some of our fundamental values in Scouting are non-violence and Peace. As Scouts, we should always be doing our best to fulfil our duties as Messengers of Peace.
Scouting Ireland is a diverse and vibrant community representing a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. It is this diversity that enriches our movement and makes us stronger. Let us embrace the differences that make each of us unique and let us stand united against any form of racism or discrimination.
Discrimination in any form goes against the very essence of what we believe in as Scouts. We challenge our members to engage in open conversations and to actively work towards dismantling the structures that perpetuate racism, violence, and discrimination.
We encourage all members to educate themselves on the issues surrounding racism, to promote understanding within their Scout Groups, and to engage in initiatives that challenge prejudice and promote equality actively. There are several resources available from WOSM and the National Youth Council of Ireland which may aid you in discussing these topics such as:
- How do I work with young people on the issue of racism? - National Youth Council of Ireland
- Get to know the Dialogue for Peace programme - Poster | Scout Learning Zone
In the coming weeks, we will be organising webinar/training sessions to explore these important topics within the Scouting Ireland community. We will have programme ideas to support you in facilitating your Programme meetings. We invite you to participate actively, share your perspectives, and join us in fostering a culture of respect and unity. In the meantime, if you need specific support in this area, please get in touch with equality@scouts.ie. Together, as Scouts, we can create a better world. Let’s create a peaceful society that values and embraces every individual and their differences.
